Kids’ Most Common Dental Procedures– What to Expect from Dental Clinics for Children

It’s not a secret that many children are scared of going to the dentist. With all the different weird tools and having to sit on a dental engine with your mouth open doesn’t really scream fun or comfort for kids in a children’s dental clinic. However, it is very important to stress to our children the importance of dental health and its benefits.  If we have poor dental health, our teeth will look ugly, and we will have a harder time biting and eating our food.

Once you’ve convinced your child of visiting the dentist, it’s time to go to the dentist for a check-up! There are also times when your child may have a dental emergency, such as a chipped tooth or a terrible toothache. In these situations, it is good to learn about the different dental procedures available for kids:

Dental Fillings

Due to children’s affinity for sweets and candy, it sometimes can’t be helped that they will develop some cavities. Another common event is when a child chips his/her tooth from getting injured while playing a game or a sport.

To remedy these common dental problems, a dentist will usually use dental fillings to fill up the cavity or chip and repair the tooth. It’s a quick and easy treatment that doesn’t hurt. What more can a kid ask for?

Sealants

While there are many kids that enjoy brushing their teeth, there are also those that don’t, and as a result can build up some plaque along the child’s teeth, especially on hidden areas like the molars or the back of teeth. One way to prevent this from happening is by having the dentist apply dental sealants on the child’s teeth. These dental sealants help protect the teeth from plaque and acid that can cause significant damage to them.

Sealants are usually best applied on the child’s permanent teeth once they start to show up, which is around 6 to 14 years old. However, it is recommended that sealants are applied as early as possible to get the best results. Consult with your dentist to help make the right decisions.

Teeth cleaning

Because of children’s love for sugary things, it is quite common for them to get cavities and/or plaque buildup. Even if a child regularly brushes and flosses his/her teeth, it’s practically impossible to remove all the plaque and cavities. In cases like that, you should have your kid get his/her teeth cleaned by a trusted dentist. Not only can dentists remove plaque buildup through cleaning, but they can also remove any tartar deposits.

Fluoride Treatment

One of the most important minerals for your kids’ teeth is fluoride. It has loads of benefits for your teeth, including but not limited to:

  • reduced risk of developing cavities
  • reduce the rate of growth of cavities
  • extending the lifespan of baby teeth
  • remedy for toothaches
  • prevent gum diseases

Fluoride treatments by the dentist are usually quick and easy to do, which is good news for every child. It is recommended that children get fluoride treatments as soon as their teeth start to grow to prevent further dental problems like tooth decay. After the initial treatment, it’s a good idea to get further treatment every three to six months depending on the risk of cavities.

Tooth extraction

Since a lot of children get into a lot of scrambles, it is often the case where he/she gets injured and must have a tooth or more extracted.  Awaiting this procedure can be a scary experience for a child, but a competent dentist will find a way to make the procedure itself as convenient as possible for the child. Usually, a local anesthesia is enough to make the child feel less pain or discomfort whilst the dentist extracts the tooth.

Dental bonding

For problems like a chipped, crooked, or discolored tooth, a dental bonding can usually do the trick to fix them. Dental bonding is done by inserting the bonding into your teeth, which fills in cavitiesand other gaps in the tooth. This in turn can improve your child’s self-confidence. Your family photos will also turn out much better once your child has a better-looking smile.

Dental crowns for kids

A slightly infected tooth can hugely affect kids as well. One of the ways to get rid of a tooth infection is by removing/filing the infected parts. Once that’s done, your child can then get dental crowns to fix and protect his/her teeth. This also makes his/her teeth look much better.

There are many possible types of dental crowns, and each have their own benefits. The material used to make dental crowns can vary, which includes porcelain, ceramic, metal, zirconia, a composite resin or a combination of these. The dentist will assess which type of material is best suited for your child’s dental crowns depending on several factors, such as the location of the tooth, how visible the tooth is, the type of tooth, along with others. Ultimately, the final decision is up to you, the parent. Make sure to weigh the pros and cons of each type before you decide.

Dental crowns are also good investments for the future of the child, as they can strengthen the teeth and help develop good habits.

X-Rays

Generally, children have more X-rays than adults. X-rays are often employed to examine a child’s teeth and whether they need some treatment. It can detect the presence of cavities which can become worse if not treated, as well as impacted teeth and tooth decay. If any of these are found in the x-ray, then the dentist can prescribe a treatment plan to help your child.
